Furman University

It's hard to get in and impossible to stay in. Furman has an extremly high, odd grading system and no academic support except peer-to-peer tutoring that never helps. It's a great school if you can handle the work and pressure.

Academic Excellence

Beautiful school with great academics. If you want a Colby, Bates or Bowdoin without the 6 months of winter or drinking scene, Furman is that type of school. Furman's size is between Davidson and Wake Forest and their academic reputation is considered equal with these schools in the South. They are working to gain national name recognition and offer generous merit aid to excellent students from outside the southern US. Facilities are amazing with a brand new library and science center.

Great School

Outstanding university - worth every cent if you have the money, but get ready to work your butt off. This is one impossibly hard school that is not for partiers or slackers; the school is out to prove how far they have come and how much they have improved and changed from years past. There are fabulous professors and some awful ones that should not be there - don't be fooled by the beauty of the school or how wonderful the people are. It's all real but academically very hard.

Furman University Academics

Outstanding school. I love it here, but it is incredibly difficult. Everyone, no matter of status or academic achievement, will find that your grades will suffer. They practice grade deflation here. All teachers are nice and somewhat helpful, but they will fail you with a smile and an "I am sorry and good luck" comment. They practice weeding out in every class. If you aren't the cream at the top, you are moved out, so look out. You could never rest here. We all work hard. We have fun, but the workload is never off your mind. Proof is in the school study areas -- everywhere everyone is on lock down with studying. If you like to party and other stuff, do yourself a favor and don't come here. In my first year, half my floor transferred out and lost their aid by just a few points (not for lack of trying -- it's just a tough school and the admin loves to show that they are the toughest school in SC/NC). Hey! they have plenty on the waiting list to come in so they don't care if you leave.

academics

Furman has a tough but great environment and wonderful people. With the professors, some are good, some bad. Only peer to peer academic help is available, and everyone is working so hard to maintain their aid that if you need help the peer to peer tutors never show or can't help -- that's the only bad thing, but I love it here. I love the conservative campus -- it's safe and fun. Furman has great Greek life that is not typical of Greeks.

education

It is an outstanding university, better in so many ways than most of the northeast schools that are so highly ranked yet are full of immoral behavior. Northeast schools are like animal house; Furman is the complete opposite. I am thrilled to say that is why I am here from the northeast. I love it here in every way but I will tell everyone Furman is incredibly difficult academically. I don't care what your scores were in HS or on the SAT - this school is tougher than any school you have heard of. There is grade deflation but I still love it here. It is outrageously priced - true - and I didn't receive one dime from Furman and I had top scores. If you're out of state good luck. It's a fun school but not a party school. That's why it's safe, clean and successful. The cops enforce the laws and we are all happy for it. There are ethics and values at Furman -- such a breath of fresh air. Everyone works hard (even the athletes) -- no free pass for anyone here. If you can't handle it, get out.

Smart, Honest, Respectful Students

My son is a student at Furman. Many students turned down highly selective schools to attend Furman. This is a relatively dry campus and students are very conservative politically, however very accepting of my President Obama loving son. Teachers tend to be quite liberal. Students spend weekends hiking in the nearby mountains or volunteer doing community service if not in the library. Not many are recovering from hangovers. It is a unique school and it is working on its lack of diversity. Downtown Greenville is about 20 minutes from the school and is NO Atlanta. The resturants are nice and Greenville has a minor league baseball team which is lots of fun. The tiny Zoo (only cost$2 I think) is kept up nicely. There is alot to do on campus which is beautiful accept they need to replace some picnic tables and get some campus dogs to keep the geese and their droppings from polluting the grounds. Furman's student body is a group of very respectful, intelligent and happy kids.

Furman Impressions

Beautiful campus but how about the rapid escallation in costs to attend over the past few years...well beyond the rate of inflation..now turning to deflation. How does the school justify this? Check out Elon University for better value!

Beautiful campus.

I visited one of my best friends from high school while he was at Furman. One thing the article doesn't mention is just how beautiful the campus is. Really, it's one of the most nicely landscaped places I've ever seen. Love the bell tower on the lake.
