If you don't like standardized tests or if you didn't do well on the SAT or ACT, Maine has some good news for you. Many of Maine's top colleges are test-optional and don't require standardized test scores. This is true even for Bowdoin College, the state's most selective college. Other schools have either open admissions or an admissions bar that isn't unreasonably high. In the table below, you'll find SAT scores for the middle 50% of enrolled students.

Maine, like all schools in the Northeast, is dominated by students who take the SAT instead of the ACT. At the University of Maine's main campus in Orono, for example, 93% of applicants submitted SAT scores and just 15% submitted ACT scores. That said, you are welcome to submit scores from either exam (or both exams), so feel free to use ACT scores if that's your preferred exam. The table below shows ACT score data for students admitted to Maine's four-year colleges:

If your scores fall within or above these ranges, you're on target for admission to one of these Maine colleges. Keep in mind that 25% of enrolled students have SAT and ACT scores below those listed, so don't view that lower number as any kind of cut-off. Also remember that SAT and ACT scores are just one part of an application. A strong academic record is going to be the most important piece of your application, so good grades in challenging college preparatory classes will play an extremely important part in the admissions decisions. Also, at some of the more selective colleges in the table, the admissions officers will also want to see a winning essay, meaningful extracurricular activities and positive letters of recommendation. If you glow in any of these areas, that can help compensate for SAT or ACT scores that aren't ideal.

If your college search isn't limited to Maine, be sure to check out the SAT and ACT data for colleges and universities in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. New England provides you with a wealth of options for higher education.
