Sentence Completion Question #8

Be Prepared for the SAT

By Allen Grove, About.com

This question is from Sentence Completion Quiz #1

Directions: select the answer that best completes the sentence.

The student put in a ________ of effort and consequently got a low score on the exam.

(a) concurrence
(b) modicum
(c) multiplicity
(d) plethora
(e) redundancy

Discussion: This is a straight-forward question if we know the meanings of the words. The word "consequently" tells us we have a direct causal relationship between the missing word and the "low score on the exam." A "modicum" of effort could easily result in a low test grade, so the answer is choice (b).

Vocabulary:

  • concurrence - simultaneous occurrence; agreement in opinion
  • modicum - a small amount
  • multiplicity - a large number; great variety
  • plethora - excess
  • redundancy - repetition; superfluity
