Sentence Completion Question #11

Be Prepared for the SAT

By Allen Grove, About.com

This question is from Sentence Completion Quiz #1

Directions: select the answer that best completes the sentence.

As support of the proposal ________, legislators tried to get voters interested once again.

(a) encroached
(b) burgeoned
(c) ebbed
(d) escalated
(e) solidified

Discussion: Many of the choices sound good in the blank, but the second half of the sentence has an important clue with the phrase "once again." We know that in the past the proposal had support, and that the proposal has lost that support. Choice (c), "ebbed," is the only one that creates the idea of lessening support.

Vocabulary:

  • burgeon - to grow
  • ebb - to decline
  • encroach - to get closer
  • escalate - to increase in intensity
  • solidify - to unite or make solid
