UNC Chapel Hill consistently finds itself among the top ten public universities in the United States. The university has highly selective admissions and represents an excellent educational value. Research strengths have earned the university membership in the AAU, and strong liberal arts and sciences earned it a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. In athletics, the North Carolina Tar Heels compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference.

Located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, UNC has a park-like and historic campus. The university was the first public university in the country, and it still has buildings dating to the eighteenth century.

The Old Well has a long history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Originally the well served as the water supply for Old East and Old West residence halls. Today students still drink from the well on the first day of classes for good luck.

One of the iconic structures on the UNC Chapel Campus is the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower, a 172-foot high tower that houses 14 bells. The tower was dedicated in 1931.

North Carolina Tar Heels Football

In athletics, the North Carolina Tar Heels compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference. The football team plays in Kenan Memorial Stadium located in the heart of the UNC Chapel Hill campus. The stadium first opened in 1927, and since then it has gone through numerous renovations and expansions. Its current capacity is 60,000 people.

North Carolina Tar Heels Men's Basketball

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill men's basketball team plays at the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center. With seating capacity of close to 22,000, it is one of the largest college basketball arenas in the country.

Morehead Planetarium at UNC Chapel Hill

The Morehead Planetarium is one of the facilities used by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An observatory atop the planetarium houses a 24" Perkin-Elmer telescope used by both undergraduate and graduate students. Visitors who call ahead for tickets can often visit the observatory on Friday guest nights.

The University of North Carolina's Louis Round Wilson Library functioned as the university's main library from 1929 until 1984 when the newly constructed Davis Library assumed that role. Today Wilson Library is home to Special Collections and the Manuscript Department, and the building has an impressive collection of Southern books. Also found within Wilson Library are the Zoology Library, Maps Collection and Music Library.

Since 1984, the Walter Royal Davis Library has been the main library for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The massive 400,000 square foot building contains the holdings for the humanities, languages, social sciences, business and more. The library's upper floors have many group study rooms that students can reserve, and the main floors have many open study and reading areas.

The lower floors of UNC Chapel Hill's Davis Library are open, bright and hung with colorful flags. On the first two floors, students will find lots of public computers, wireless internet access, reference materials, microforms and large reading areas.

The Carolina Inn at UNC Chapel Hill

In the 1990s, the Carolina Inn at UNC Chapel Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building first opened its doors to guests in 1924, and since then it has undergone significant renovations. The building is a highly rated hotel and a popular spot for meetings, banquets and balls.

NROTC and Naval Science at UNC Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina's Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program was established in 1926, and since then NROTC has evolved to have cross-registration programs with Duke University and North Carolina State University.

The program's mission is "to develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, and loyalty, and with the core values of honor, courage and commitment in order to commission college graduates as naval officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in the naval service, and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government."
