The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, nicknamed "The Tang," opened in 2000. The founding director of the museum, Charles Stainback, described it as "a museum of ideas, not objects."
First and foremost, the Tang is a teaching museum, and Skidmore has initiated the effort to use the exhibitions to enrich classroom curricula. The Tang focuses on interdisciplinary education--exhibitions span diverse disciplines from performing arts to literature, and even math and science.
The museum also showcases art in all media, featuring student work, faculty-student collaboration, and the work of acclaimed contemporary artists.
