Wolstein Hall at Case Western Reserve University

After moving from Tomlinson Hall, the Office of Undergraduate Admission is now located in Wolstein Hall. The building was constructed as a personal residence in 1910, and it later served a fraternity house, before being renovated to accommodate undergraduate programs. Wolstein Hall is located on the north side of campus, between the Mandel Community Studies Center and the Dively Center. The new location is designed to give incoming and prospective students a welcoming first experience on campus.

The Leutner Commons is where students living in the North Residential Village can get food and hang out with their friends. Students visiting Leutner Commons can get wings and nachos at The Spot/L3, authentic Mexican food at the Taqueria, and home-style comfort foods, pasta, and vegetarian food from various stations. The Commons also has a huge study area, game tables, and wireless internet throughout the building.

The Allen Memorial Medical Library is part of the Cleveland Health Sciences Library, and it contains many of the university’s clinical journals. In addition to research material, the library also features the Cushing Reading Room where students can browse the journals, and the Ford Auditorium, which has 450 seats and can be used for on-campus events. The library also holds the Dittrick Medical History Center, which contains the archives, rare book collection, and the Dittrick Museum of Medical History. The building is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Bellflower Hall, also known as the Bellflower House, was built in the early 1900s and was originally a family residence. Before Case Western bought the house in the 1990s, it was a nursing home, a 24-hour nursing facility, and then a fraternity house. It now holds the university’s Writing Recourse Center, where students can get help writing and editing papers. The first floor has many of the center’s recourses, and the second floor holds office space.

The newly renovated Severance Hall was constructed for the Cleveland Orchestra, which Case Western students can easily enjoy as the building is located right on campus. Students can get free tickets to the Orchestra’s Thursday evening shows and special performances through a weekly drawing. Case Western students with their school ID can also buy a $50 frequent fan card, which will get them into most concerts.

The Cleveland Institute of Music was founded in 1920, and it continues to be an essential part of both Cleveland and Case Western culture. One division of the Institute is the collegiate conservatory, where students can earn credits toward their bachelor’s and master’s programs, artist diplomas, professional studies, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. The Institute employs over 170 faculty members, and some of them are also members of the Cleveland Orchestra.

The Thwing Center is where students meet to hang out with friends, participate in activities with their student organizations, and take part in university-sponsored programs. Also called the Student Union, the Thwing Center contains a snack bar, restaurant, ballroom, and classrooms. Rooms in the Thwing Center can be rented out for events and meetings, as well as banquets and seminars in the ballroom. The center is located next to the Kelvin Smith Library.

Students exploring the Case Western campus might come across a community garden, which is used both for food and for research. Scientists at the university use the gardens for biology and sociology research. One green area is the Wade Vegetable Garden, which is in the Valley Ridge Farm (or Lower Farm) and is part of the Farm Food Program. The University Farm is made up of the Squire Valleevue and Valley Ridge Farms, and it contains 400 acres of forests, meadows, ponds, and a natural watershed.

The Peter B. Lewis Building is the home of Case Western’s renowned Weatherhead School of Management. The building was dedicated in 2002, and the structure’s unique design comes from architect Frank Gehry. The Lewis Building has many interesting features, including a skylight in the atrium that looks like a bubble and directs sunlight into lower level classrooms. The building also contains 72 flags, which represent the countries that students in the Weatherhead program hail from.

The George S. Dively Building provides lots of quality learning spaces for the Weatherhead School of Management, including six meeting rooms and over 7,000 square feet of meeting space. The building’s conference space is used by nonprofit organizations, professional associations, and corporations, as well as individual management programs. The Dively Building features high-tech audio/visual equipment, connections to the university’s fiber-optic computer network, and catering services.

The historic mansion was built in 1910 but offers contemporary luxury to its guests, including free WiFi and printing, meeting space, and complimentary breakfast. The Glidden House is located in the University Circle Area, and also near the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

The Guilford House was constructed in 1892, and it now serves as the home for Case Western’s Departments of English and Modern Languages and Literatures, which are part of the College of Arts and Sciences. In the Guilford House, students can find classrooms, faculty offices, and other department resources. There are more resources available to English and Modern Languages students, including collections of Renaissance literature and educational audiovisual materials. Case Western earned a chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society for its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences.

The Florence Harkness Memorial Chapel is located on Bellflower Road, and it is mainly used for concerts, department recitals, and music classes. Hitchcock House is a four-floor student dormitory located in the North Residential Village. It features laundry services, a full kitchen, and storage for bicycles on the first floor. Hitchcock House has many double rooms, beds you can loft or bunk, and it holds about 100 students.

Greek life is a big part of the Case Western Reserve experience. The university has 27 Greek Chapters, and many have their own houses like Alpha Chi Omega. Scholarship is an important part of Case Western’s organizations, and the students participating in Greek life have an average GPA of 3.36. Greek life students also raise about $45,000 and complete around 12,000 hours of service annually. Most students involved in a sorority or fraternity also participate in other student organizations or sports as well.

The school has four multidisciplinary research centers, as well as classrooms and offices. There are about 400 students in the school, and it has an 8:1 student/faculty ratio. The school has also received a 270% increase in research grant funding since 2005.

Mather Park is home base for Case Western’s Spartan softball team. The park and surrounding areas feature all the amenities of a Division III softball facility, including a high-tech scoreboard, hand-manicured playing surface, new press box, internet access, expansive dugouts, batting cages, and enough bleachers and chair back seating for 250 fans. Many of Case Westerns athletic teams compete in the NCAA University Athletic Association.

The Case Western Reserve campus is full of beautiful art pieces, both in galleries and across the grounds. One example of this is a sundial that was given to the Mather College Campus in 1906, which was listed in the North American Sundial Society register. Another piece of campus art is a huge black structure made of steel, located in the Case Quadrangle. This art, which was designed by Irish artist Tony Smith, is called Spitball.

The Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center is part of the North Campus Residential Village and Athletic Complex. The three-level building is packed with facilities and resources to help students stay active and have fun. The Varsity Club provides meeting space and a scenic overlook called Stu’s Balcony, where students can see the field and track. The Wyant Center also contains a fitness center, with a cardio workout facility, and a varsity weight room.

The university’s soccer, football, and track and field teams use the DiSanto Field, a top-quality facility complete with a press box, track, coaches’ area, and 2,400 seats. The field was built in the European box style, and it is made of the multifunctional FieldTurf surface. There is also a training room located adjacent to the field with locker rooms and whirlpools. Seven of the buildings surrounding the field are actually dorms, where about 800 undergraduate students live.

The University Hospital is a top-notch teaching hospital and academic center. Case Western students can participate in the university’s UH/CMC Academic Emergency Medicine Residency Program right in the University Hospital/Case Medical Center. This three-year program is affiliated with the MetroHealth Medical Center for Level-1 Trauma and Burn rotations. The University Health System Consortium ranks the Case Western Reserve University Hospital system/ Case Medical Center number three in the nation.

Case Western's many excellent medical research programs are one reason the university is a member of the Association of American Universities, a selective group of the country's top research universities.

The UH Seidman Cancer Center is the only freestanding cancer hospital in the area. This University Hospital opened in 2011, and the 375,000-square-foot building offers not only top-quality education but also patient- and family-centered care and state-of-the-art therapies. Students at Case Western can sign up to volunteer at the Seidman Cancer Center as cancer prevention educators, to help in health fairs and community events.
