Learn About the 9 Colleges in The Summit League

The Summit League is a NCAA Division I athletic conference with members coming from a huge area: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Utah. The conference headquarters are located in Elmhurst, Illinois. Member institutions are all public universities with the exception of the University of Denver. The conference fields nine men's and ten women's sports.

IPFW has grown significantly since its founding in 1964, and today it is the largest university in northeastern Indiana. The 682-acre campus sits along the banks of the St. Joseph River. The majority of IPFU students come from Indiana, and the university serves the needs of students with other work commitments. About one-third of students are part-time. IPFU offers over 200 programs of study, and among undergraduates, business and elementary education are particularly popular.

Since IUPUI first opened its doors in the late 1960s, it has grown into a large and well-regarded public university. In 2011 the university ranked highly in the U.S. News & World Report list of "up and coming" universities. The university offers more than 250 degree programs; among undergraduates, business and nursing are both extremely popular.

North Dakota State University

NDSU's Fargo campus occupies 258 acres, but the university owns over 18,000 acres with its Agricultural Experiment Station and many research centers throughout the state. Undergraduates can choose from 102 bachelor's degree programs and 79 minors. Programs in business, engineering, and the health sciences are among the most popular. Academics are supported by an 18 to 1 student/faculty ratio.

Located on a 263-acre campus, Oral Roberts University is a private, Christ-centered university that takes pride in educating the whole person -- mind, body and spirit. The school offers over 100 majors and minors, and academics are supported by a healthy 13 to 1 student/faculty ratio. Majors in areas of religion, business, communications and nursing are among the most popular. Financial aid is strong with the great majority of students receiving significant grant aid.

University of Denver

The University of Denver main campus is located about seven miles from downtown Denver, and students have easy access to both outdoor activities and an urban center. For its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences, DU was awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The majority of undergraduate students, however, are in pre-professional programs, and about half of graduating students major in some area of business.

As the state's largest university, South Dakota State University offers its students the choice of 200 academic programs and a similar number of student organizations. Nursing and pharmaceutical sciences are particularly strong. SDSU represents an excellent educational value, even for out-of-state applicants, and any student who scores over a 23 ACT composite score is guaranteed scholarship funds for four years.

A metropolitan research institution, the University of Nebraska at Omaha is located in Omaha, Nebraska, and is one part of the University of Nebraska system. New to Division I, the University of Nebraska at Omaha is only recently making their move into the Summit League, while their men's ice hockey team already at the Division I level in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Founded in 1862, USD is the state's oldest university. Students can choose from 132 majors and minors supported by a 15 to 1 student/faculty ratio. High achieving students should look into the university's Honors Program for a more personalized and challenging undergraduate experience. Social life at USD is active with over 120 student clubs and organizations.

Undergraduates can choose from 66 majors, and fields in education, business, communication, and criminal justice are among the most popular. The university has a 16 to 1 student/faculty ratio, and over three-quarters of all classes have fewer than 30 students. Western Illinois has over 250 student organizations including 21 fraternities and 9 sororities.
