Established in 1895 and located in the biggest city in Kansas, Wichita State University is a public university with a 330-acre main campus. Students come from all around the country and world, but the great majority (over 90%) are from Kansas. Most students live off campus. The university has a 20 to 1 student / faculty ratio, and about two-thirds of classes have fewer than 30 students. Professional fields in business, nursing, education and engineering are all popular with undergraduates. In athletics, the Wichita State University Shockers (what's a Shocker?) compete in the NCAA Division I Missouri Valley Conference.
