University of Southern Maine Description:

The University of Southern Maine bills itself as the "most cosmopolitan of Maine’s institutions of higher education." The university has three campuses -- its two main hubs are about 20 minutes from each other in Portland and Gorham. In the Lewiston area, a smaller third campus specializes in interdisciplinary education for non-traditional students. The student body as a whole represents a diverse mix of backgrounds with an average student age of 28. About half of all students take classes part-time. USM is a public institution and part of the University of Maine System. Undergraduates can choose from about 50 bachelor degree programs; majors in business, nursing and communications are among the most popular. In athletics, the USM Huskies compete in the NCAA Division III Little East Conference for most sports.
