University of North Alabama Description:

Established in 1830 as LaGrange College, the University of North Alabama has a rich history including the distinction of being the first state-supported teachers college in the South. The school's 130-acre campus is located in the historic disrict of Florence, Alabama, a town on the Tennessee River. Students come from around the country and world, but UNA is largely a regional university with about 70% of students coming from Alabama. Students can choose from more than 60 majors with professional fields in business, education and nursing being most popular. Academic programs are supported by a 23 to 1 student / faculty ratio and an average class size of 25. High achieving students should look into the UNA Honors Program for access to special classes, travel opportunities, and the Honors Center. On the athletic front, the UNA Lions compete in the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference. If you visit campus, be sure to check out Leo II and Una, the campus's resident African lions.
