University of Alaska Fairbanks Description:

Even though it has fewer students than the University of Alaska Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks is the flagship campus of Alaska's public university system, and it is the only university in the state that grants doctoral degrees. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the Fairbanks location -- the Outdoor Adventures Program offers a range of hiking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, rafting, skiing, snowshoeing, dog mushing, ice climbing, and winter camping trips. The university takes pride in the meaningful relationships between students and faculty, and the healthy 12 to 1 student / faculty ratio is unusual for a public university. UAF students come from all 50 states and 47 foreign countries, and over 20 percent of students are American Indian/Native Alaskans. Students have a huge range of academic options with 168 degrees and 33 certificates offered in 127 disciplines ranging from art to engineering. Students will also find a wide range of clubs, organizations and activities to keep them busy. On the athletic front, the Alaska Nanooks compete in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference for most sports. Hockey is Division I. The university fields five sports for men and six for women. The Nanooks have won ten NCAA championships for rifle. Finally, the campus is home to the UAF Museum of the North, the International Arctic Research Center, and several other major research centers.
