University of Alaska Anchorage Description:

With over 18,000 students, the University of Alaska Anchorage is by far Alaska's largest university. The mountain views, lakes, and forests that feature so prominently on the university's campus belie the fact that the school is just a couple miles from Midtown Anchorage. Alaska Pacific University is an easy walk down the road. The university is made up of six schools and colleges: Education, Health and Social Welfare, Arts and Sciences, Business and Public Policy, Engineering, and the Community and Technical College. UAA has a sizable traditional undergraduate population as well as a large population of adult and continuing education students. Over half of all students are enrolled part-time. The university offers 146 degree programs at the certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and masters levels. Among bachelor's degree candidates, nursing and psychology are most popular. Academics are supported by a 16 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Student life includes a wide range of clubs, activities, and organizations including a few fraternities and sororities. In athletics, the UAA Seawolves compete in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference for most sports. Gymnastics and hockey compete at the Division I level. The university fields 11 intercollegiate sports.
