Pittsburg State University is a public institution located in Pittsburg, Kansas, a small city in the southeastern corner of Kansas. Joplin, Missouri, is a little over half an hour to the south, and Kansas City is two hours to the north. Out-of-state students from nearby areas are often able to pay PSU's low in-state tuition. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in over 100 academic programs. At the bachelor's degree level, professional fields such as business, education, and nursing are extremely popular. Academics are supported by a 18 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Student life is active with over 150 clubs and organizations, and the university has a new recreation center and student apartment complex. Pittsburg State also has several fraternities and sororities. On the athletic front, the PSU Gorilla's compete in the NCAA Division II Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The university fields six men's and five women's intercollegiate sports.
