Founded in 1896, Oakwood University is a private historically Black university with ties to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The university's 1,185-acre campus is located in Huntsville, Alabama, a city of about 175,000. The University of Alabama in Huntsville and Alabama A&M are both just a short drive away. The university has a largely undergraduate focus, but in 2009 the school awarded its first master's degrees in pastoral studies. At the undergraduate level, popular areas of study include theology, biological sciences, business, and various health fields including nursing. In athletics, the Oakwood Ambassadors compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
