Established as a junior college by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928, Mount Mercy University is today a master's degree-granting Catholic university offering a range of liberal arts and professional degree programs. The 40-acre campus is located in a residential neighborhood of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, just a couple minutes from downtown. Chicago, the Twin Cities, and St. Louis are each about four hours away. Students can chose from over 40 majors with business and nursing being most popular among undergraduates. The university also has many accelerated degree programs that cater to adult students. Academics are supported by small classes and a 12 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Students with strong GPAs and ACT scores should check out the university's Honors Program. On the student life front, the university has over 40 clubs and organizations, and in athletics, the Mount Mercy Mustangs compete in the NAIA Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC). The school fields seven men's and eight women's sports.
