Marlboro College Description:

Marlboro College is not for everyone. While the small college's admissions are not remarkably selective, successful students need to be motivated and up for a rigorous yet relatively unstructured curriculum. The college does not have a long checklist of core requirements like most liberal arts colleges. Instead, students must pass a "Clear Writing Requirement" in their first year, and then in their junior and senior years, they must complete a self-designed "Plan of Concentration" under the guidance of faculty advisers. Upper-level students will often have many hours of tutorials and self-directed work rather than traditional class attendance. The college is truly student-centered in that students must take responsibility for their own educations. The college's academic initiatives are supported by an impressive 8 to 1 student / faculty ratio and an average class size of 10. To succeed, Marlboro students need to love learning, so perhaps it is not surprising that 69% of graduates go on to graduate school. For these reasons and more, Marlboro is one of the 40 schools featured in Loren Pope's highly regarded Colleges That Change Lives. The college itself occupies an unassuming 300-acre hillside campus in Marlboro, Vermont, a town in the southeast corner of the state. Some of the current buildings were part of an area farm before the school was established in 1946.
