Founded in 1839, Longwood University is a public university located on a 60-acre campus in Farmville, Virginia, about 65 miles west of Richmond. Hampden-Sydney College is also nearby. Longwood believes in hands-on learning experiences, and all students are required to take part in an internship or research project. The university also offers a wide range of study-abroad opportunities. Longwood has an 18 to 1 student / faculty ratio and an average class size of 21. The school frequently ranks well among southeastern colleges. On the athletic front, the Longwood Lancers joined the NCAA Division I Big South Conference in 2012.
