Ferrum College Description:

The Ferrum College historic marker shown to the right reads, "Ten miles southwest is Ferrum, named for iron mines nearby. Ferrum College was established by the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Church in 1913 through the influence of its Woman's Society of Christian Service. It became a junior college exclusively in 1955 after years of service in secondary education." Ferrum has maintained its ties to the Methodist Church, but today the school is a private four-year liberal arts college. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the college's location in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains -- numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure are nearby. Roanoke sits 35 miles to the north, and Greensboro is about an hour to the south. In academics, students can choose from 33 areas of study supported by a 17 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Student life is active with a wide range of clubs, organizations, honor societies, and performing arts groups. In athletics, the Ferrum College Panthers compete in the NCAA Division III USA South Athletic Conference. The college fields nine women's and ten men's intercollegiate sports.
