Claflin University Description:

Founded in 1869, Claflin University has a rich history. The university was founded by Methodist missionaries working to prepare freed slaves to become American citizens. Today the college is the oldest historically black university in South Carolina, and the school maintains its affiliation with the Methodist Church. Claflin has an impressive 12 to 1 student faculty ratio, and the curriculum is grounded in the liberal arts and sciences. Business and social science programs are most popular among undergraduates. The college sits on a 43-acre campus in the small city of Orangeburg. In athletics, the Claflin University Pathersn compete in the NCAA Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The college fields five men's and four women's intercollegiate sports.
