Alfred University Description:
Located in the rolling hills of Western New York, Alfred University has the deceptive feel of a small liberal arts college but the breadth of a comprehensive university. Liberal Arts and Sciences makes up about half of the university, but Alfred also has schools of business, graduate psychology, engineering and art and design. Coeducational since its founding in 1836, Alfred was the second college in the country to educate men and women equally. Complementing its strengths in ceramics, Alfred was awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for excellence in liberal arts and sciences. Athletics are popular at Alfred, and the AU Saxons compete in the NCAA Division III Empire 8 Athletic Conference. The university fields nine men's and eleven women's intercollegiate teams, and the school made my list of top equestrian colleges.

Although there isn't a lot of subjective data here, I want to note that I'm an English professor at Alfred University. I'm quite fond of Alfred, my colleagues, and my students, so bias is always possible. -Allen
