Northern New Mexico University Description:

Northern New Mexico University, frequently referred to simply as "Northern," is a public four-year university located in Espanola, New Mexico. Albuquerque is a 90-minute drive to the south. The college takes pride in its affordability: Northern ranks #1 in New Mexico for its low cost, and it is also one of the least pricey colleges in the entire Southwest. The college graduates far more students with associate degrees than bachelor's degrees. Northern students can choose from 13 bachelor's programs and over 50 associate and certificate degrees. Professional fields such as nursing and business tend to be the most popular. The college emphasizes student engagement, an effort that is supported by a 15 to 1 student / faculty ratio, small classes, and extensive opportunities for hands-on experiences through undergraduate research, internships, and community involvement. The college has a primarily commuter population, and roughly half of students take classes part time. Future plans, however, include the development of on-campus housing. Even as a largely commuter campus, however, Northern has an active student life scene. Students can participate in a wide range of clubs and organizations including Chess Club, Student Senate, Student Nursing Association, Multi-Faith Club, Student Veterans of America, and American Indian Student Organization. On the athletic front, the NNMU Eagles compete in the NAIA PCAC, Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. The college fields four men's and four women's intercollegiate sports (cross country, basketball, golf, and bowling) as well as a co-ed spirit program.
