Virginia Union University is a private Baptist historically Black university located on an 84-acre campus in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia Commonwealth University is just a few blocks away, and Washington D.C. is about two hours to the north. The university's rich history dates to 1865 when it was founded to provide educational opportunities for newly emancipated formerly enslaved persons. Today VUU is a comprehensive university with a liberal arts focus. Popular majors span the sciences, social sciences, humanities, business, and professional fields. Academics are supported by a 15-to-1 student to faculty ratio, and the university takes pride in the personal attention students receive.

Campus life is active with a range of student clubs and organizations. In athletics, the VUU Panthers compete in the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA). They have won numerous national championships, and the men’s basketball team has frequently won the CIAA championship. The university fields five men's and eight women's intercollegiate sports.
