Located in the state's Upper Peninsula, Northern Michigan University is one of Michigan's 15 public universities, and the school occupies a 360-acre campus in Marquette. Students also have access to many off-campus locations for environmental and biological research. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the campus's proximity to hiking, snowmobile, bike, and cross-country ski trails. The region also boasts many opportunities for downhill skiing, kayaking, camping, and fishing. Northern Michigan students can choose from 147 degree programs ranging from one-year diplomas to a new Doctor of Nursing Practice program. At the bachelor's degree level, popular fields of study include art, education, business, and nursing. Academics are supported by a 22 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Campus life is active with a wide range of student clubs and organizations that sponsor over 300 programs and events a year. Athletics are popular and the campus is home to a range of sport camps, recreational sports, and intercollegiate teams. NMU's athletic facilities include the Superior Dome, the largest wooden sports dome in the world, and the U.S. Olympic Education Center, home to short-track speed skating, weightlifting, and Greco-Roman wrestling. On the intercollegiate front, the Northern Michigan University Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The university fields seven men's and nine women's sports. The hockey team competes at the Division I level.
