Southern University at New Orleans Description:

Southern University at New Orleans is a public, four-year university located in New Orleans, Louisiana, seven miles from downtown. SUNO is a historically Black college that was founded in 1956 as a branch campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge.The university was completely inundated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and since then the school has been rebuilding and reinventing itself as a center of learning that addresses 21st-century challenges. The university introduced student housing for the first time in 2010, and new programs such as Public Administration and Business Entrepreneurship were created in response to the Katrina tragedy. Academics at SUNO are supported by an 18 to 1 student / faculty ratio, and the university's surprisingly low tuition make it an excellent value. SUNO offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Associate’s degrees through the colleges and schools of Education, Social Work, Graduate Studies, Arts and Sciences, and Business and Public and Administration. Campus life is active with intramural sports and over 30 student clubs and organizations including the Cold Poets Society, the Royal Jewels Dance Team, the National Conference of Artists, and several fraternities and sororities. On the intercollegiate front, the SUNO Knights compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) with sports including women’s volleyball and men's and women's basketball and track and field.
