Discussion of USMMA's Admissions Standards

The United States Merchant Marine Academy has an open admissions policy, but this certainly doesn't mean that all applicants get in. This service academy has minimum test scores for admissions, so to get in you will need SAT and ACT scores that are above average. The Academy looks for particular strength in math. As you can see from the scattergram above, the majority of successful applicants had high school grades up in the "A" range, SAT scores of 1200 or higher (RW+M), and ACT composite scores of 25 or higher.

Grades and test scores, however, are just part of the applicaiton. As a military academy, USMMA is looking for students who can handle the physical challenges required of military officers, and all applicants must take a fitness assessment before being admitted. The academy likes to see evidence of leadership and participation in athletics as part of an applicant's extracurricular involvement. The application also requires three letters of recommendation and a letter of nomination from a U.S. Representative or Senator. Finally, every applicant must write a 200 to 300 word biographical sketch explaining his or her interest in the Academy and proposed field of study.
