Discussion of Hampden-Sydney College's Admissions Standards:
Hampden-Sydney College is a private liberal arts college for men in Virginia. Nearly a half of all applicants will not get in, and those who are admitted tend to have strong grades and standardized test scores. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school GPAs of "B" or better, combined SAT scores of about 1000 or higher (RW+M), and ACT composite scores of 20 or better.
Admission to Hampden-Sydney, however, is about more than grades and test scores. As the graph shows, a few students were accepted with numbers a bit below the norm. This is because the college has holistic admissions. Whether you use Hampden-Sydney's application, the Universal Application, or the Common Application, the admissions folks will want to see a record of challenging high school courses, a well written essay, interesting extracurricular activities and positive letters of recommendation.
