Discussion of Calvin College's Admissions Standards: Successful applicants to Calvin College tend to have solid academic records and standardized test scores. About a quarter of all applicants will not get in. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent students who won admission. Most had SAT scores (RW+M) of 1000 or higher, an ACT composite of 18 or higher, and a high school average of a "B" or better. Grades and test scores above these lower ranges will improve your chances of being admitted. Note that Calvin College has minimum standards for admission: in 2016, these were a 2.5 GPA, a 20 ACT composite score or 1020 SAT (510 Math and 510 Critical Reading). Applicants who don't meet these standards are still encouraged to apply, for the college offers conditional admissions for students who show potential. This is why you'll notice in the graph that a few students were admitted with grades and test scores that were below the norm. Calvin College has holistic admissions and evaluates the whole applicant, not just numerical data. Whether you use the Calvin College application or the Common Application, the admissions folks will be looking for a strong application essay, meaningful extracurricular activities, and a positive letter of recommendation. Also, Calvin College like all selective colleges will be looking at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. AP, Honors, and IB courses all strengthen an application.
