Discussion of York College's Admissions Standards

York College, one of the senior colleges in the City University of New York system, rejects more students than it admits. The low acceptance rate, however, is more the result of a large applicant pool than an overly high bar for admissions. In the graph above, the blue and green data points represent admitted students. Very few had particularly high SAT or ACT scores. Typical SAT scores (RW+M) range between about 850 and 1,250, while typical ACT composite scores range from 15 to 26. GPA's range from the "C" range to the "A" range. Students with grades and test scores above the lower end of these ranges will have a significantly better chance of being admitted to York College, and you can see that the great majority of admitted students had grades in the "B" range or better.

To be successful, applicants need to demonstrate that they have completed a college preparatory curriculum in high school. For first-time first-year students, course work should ideally include 3 years of English, 3 years of Social Studies, 3 years of Math, at least 2 years of a Foreign Language, at least 2 years of a Laboratory Science, and a year of a Performance or Visual Art subject. Be sure to check the York College admissions website for the most up-to-date guidelines and requirements.

The CUNY application is not based on a holistic admissions policy in any significant way. The application does not require an essay, letters of recommendation, or a resumé of extracurricular activities. The exception to this is the Macaulay Honors College. For the Honors College, applicants must write two essays, list extracurricular activities and community service, demonstrate personal initiative and leadership, and provide teacher recommendations. For strong students, applying to Macaulay is definitely worth the effort. The Honors College has significant perks including full tuition scholarships, a free laptop computer, money for research or service projects, internship opportunities, special classes, and a pass to cultural events in the city.
