Discussion of Florida Southern College's Admissions Standards:

Florida Southern College has selective admissions, and roughly half of all applicants will not get in. That said, the admissions bar isn't exceptionally high, and hard working high school students with decent grades will have a good chance of being admitted. In the graph above, the blue and green data points represent students who were admitted. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had combined SAT scores (RW+M) of 1000 or higher, an ACT composite score of 19 or higher, and a high school average of "B" or better. You'll notice a bunch of red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) overlapping with the green and blue on the left side and lower edge of the graph. This suggests that your chances of being admitted will be much stronger if your grades and test scores are above these lower ranges. You'll be in a stronger position with a combined SAT score of 1050 or higher and a GPA that's at least a little above a 3.0 (unweighted).

If you're wondering why some students were accepted and some rejected who had very similar academic records, it's because grades and test scores are just one variable in the Florida Southern admissions equation. To quote the college's admissions website, "Of course we’ll consider your test scores, grades, and the rigor of your courses. We’ll also look at extracurricular activities, leadership, community service, creative projects, and hobbies — as these offer a broader picture of who you are as a person."

Florida Southern allows students to apply using the school's application or the Common Application. Neither application has an advantage, and both request information that supports the college's holistic admissions policy. The admissions officers at Florida Southern will want to see a strong application essay, meaningful extracurricular activities, and a positive letter of recommendation from an academic reference. Your awards, community service, and leadership experiences can all strengthen your application. And as with all selective colleges, AP, Honors, IB, and Dual Enrollment classes can help demonstrate your college readiness.

Finally, note that Florida Southern College has an Early Decision admissions program. If you're certain that FSC is the right school for you, Early Decision has the benefits of receiving a decision in December and, if admitted, priority selection of residence halls. For many colleges, Early Decision has the added benefit of helping to demonstrate your interest.
