Discussion of Chicago State University's Admissions Standards:

Chicago State University, a public institution located in the south side of Chicago, has a low acceptance rate -- just 21% in 2015. That said, the university isn't particularly selective. Instead, the low admit rate is the result of a relatively large applicant pool, and a significant percentage of applicants who don't meet the minimum requirements for admission or who apply after spaces have been filled. The graph above shows admissions data for students who were accepted, rejected and wait listed. Most admitted students had combined SAT scores (RW+M) of 850 or higher, ACT composite scores of 16 or higher, and a high school GPA of 2.5 (a "C+" / "B-"). A few students were admitted with grades and test scores below these lower ranges, and a few were rejected with slightly higher numbers.

The Chicago State admissions website states that applicants must have a 16 ACT composite score or 790 SAT score (RW+M) to be eligible for admission. The Cappex data in the graph, however, shows that many students get in with scores below these minimums. This may be in part because applicants who aren't quite prepared for college-level academics can apply to the University College Program. This program helps students develop basic skills and acclimate to the university environment. Note that all applicants to University College must attend an information session and arrange an interview.

Chicago State has holistic admissions, so decisions are based on more than numerical data. Grades and standardized test scores are certainly important pieces of the admission equation, but non-numerical measures are also important. When you use the CSU application or the Common Application, the admissions officers will want to see a well-crafted personal essay (up to 650 words), and a counselor or teacher letter of recommendation. The application also asks about extracurricular activities, and meaningful involvement and leadership experience can certainly strengthen your application.

Chicago State expects applicants to have finished four units of English, three units of math, three units of social studies, three units of science, and two electives. Like most colleges, Chicago State will view taking rigorous high school courses positively. Successful completion of AP, IB, Honors, and Dual Enrollment courses all help demonstrate your college readiness.
