My top picks for the Midwest encompass a wide range of colleges and universities -- private and public, urban and rural, large and small, secular and religious. The 30 colleges and universities on my list were chosen based on a range of factors including retention rates, graduation rates, student engagement, academic strengths, and financial aid.

It will come as no surprise that schools like Notre Dame, Northwestern, the University of Chicago, Carleton and Grinnell made the list. Other schools may be less familiar. Earlham College, a Quaker liberal arts school in Richmond, IN, really deserves to be on this list.

Excellent suggestion Sarah. If my list had been a couple of schools longer, Earlham would have made the cut. But thanks for bringing it to the attention of readers here–it really is a wonderful school. I ran a spotlight on Earlham a couple of years ago.

I noticed no Missouri University of Science and Technology (Rolla) on this list. Second highest starting salary for undergrads in the Midwest.

I have been preparing my son for college and it is hard to say what characteristics <a href=”http://www.onestoptutoring.com/view/top_10_colleges.php”>I would consider to make a top colleges list. I think</a> your factors are extremely important and the only other factor on the top of my head that would be important to me is location, although this can be a very personal opinion attribute.

Ohio State is one of the most glaring omissions. Better than Miami U according to many rankings.
