The UC application is now live! If you're one of the tens of thousands of students who will be applying for freshman admission to one of the University of California's nine undergraduate campuses, the personal statement is an important part of the application.

All freshman applicants must respond to two prompts, and the combined answers need to be 1,000 words or fewer. The first of those prompts asks a deceptively simple question:

Describe the world you come from -- for example, your family, community or school -- and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

These tips for the UC personal statement prompt #1 can help guide you as you craft a response. One key to the prompt is to recognize that the term "world" gives you lots of latitude for your essay. You need to figure out what forces have truly shaped you into the person you are today. Is your "world" most defined by family or friends, or is it a more solitary place? Even the pages of a book represent a type of "world."
