Columbia University saw its undergraduate applicant pool increase by 5% over last year. 33,460 students applied to Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, up from 31,818 for the Class of 2016. This year's numbers are not a record -- the Class of 2015 had nearly 35,000 applicants. Nevertheless, it's clearly going to be another extremely competitive year at the country's top universities.
