The Common Application gives students a lot of freedom with personal essay option #6: Topic of Your Choice. Be careful not to abuse the freedom. Sometimes I advise students against the “topic of your choice” essay option because I know some students see it as an easy way out to submit something they have previously written. I have also had more than one college representative indicate that they would prefer to see a essay that falls under one category. Most of the time it seems that essays can fall into a few different categories. I do believe that a good college essay that captures the true essence of a student can sometimes tip the scale in favor of one applicant over another. It is one of those subjective factors over which a student does have control.
