Payscale.com recently published a ranking of undergraduate degrees by average salary. Not too surprisingly, engineering degrees dominate the top of the list. What may surprise you, however, is how well many of the liberal arts fields do. Philosophy majors have higher mid-career salaries than students who earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration. My second undergraduate major of English also fairs well.

The Payscale list focuses solely on students who hold no degree higher than a bachelors. Thus, you won't find dentists, doctors, professors, lawyers or MBAs on the list.

A caveat on this topic -- I always advise students to major in the subject for which they have the most passion. Earnings and your financial and personal success are directly connected to how much passion you have for what you are doing.
