This week's spotlight takes us to Atlanta where we find Spelman College, an excellent women's college, liberal arts college, and historically Black college. With its selective admissions and high graduation rate, Spelman has earned high rankings as a top school for African Americans and as a college with proven success fostering social mobility.

As a small undergraduate college with roughly 2,300 students and an 11 to 1 student / faculty ratio, Spelman College gives its students lots of personal attention. Its urban location allows it to share resources with the Atlanta University Center, a consortium of historically Black colleges that includes Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine.

If you'd like to learn more about Spelman College, check out the Spelman profile and visit the official Spelman website. If you're familiar with the Spelman, please share your impressions in the Spelman discussion thread in the College Admissions Forum.

Every week I spotlight a great college that might be off the radar of college applicants. If you'd like to recommend a school for a future spotlight, please do so here in the forum.

Dr. Andrew Beards,
Reader in Philosophy and Director of the B.A. (Hons.) Philosophy, Maryvale Institute, Birmingham U.K.

Dear Editor,

In this difficult financial period for students in the U.S. I thought that I would write to you to explain the opportunities afforded by study at the Maryvale Institute in the U.K.

Maryvale Institute is a Catholic Institute offering B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Theology and Philosophy. It is accredited, and the degrees are validated, by the British Open University and Maynooth (national University of Ireland). Maryvale is a distance-learning Institute, which uses various resources to support the study of our students which for the most part takes place at home. However, we do have a residential requirement and ask students to come to the Institute once or twice per year (for those outside the UK) for lectures, seminars and tutorials.

I think that the great attraction of our degrees for US students who wish to study Theology or Philosophy are: A) The inherent quality of our degrees and their validation (accreditation) by first rate academic bodies (Maynooth NUI and the British Open University), B) The very low costs: a B.A with us takes five years at a cost of £1, 575 per year in total. The additional cost is that of one or two airfares over to the UK per year for a week long or a weekend residential session (the fee includes accommodation costs when here).

Please feel free to visit our website: http://www.maryvale.ac.uk/

With best wishes,

Dr. Andrew Beards

I was excited to see you highlight Spelman College. As an HBCU alum, I have long known the power of an HBCU education. The great networks and connections that Spelman and other HBCU students acquire upon graduation is impressive.

I recently received the information below regarding a fundraiser organized by Spelman Alum Adrienne Lance Lucas. The Blue Diamond Awards described below is a perfect example of why choosing a small private institution like Spelman is a smart choice. They have a strong network of dedicated alums.

On Sunday, November 16, 2008 Alumnae and friends of Spelman College from the Midwest honored women from the region who are pioneers in their fields and leaders in their communities. Proceeds from the event provide financial support to Spelman students from the region.

“I felt a personal calling to help as many students as possible complete their education in light of the current financial crisis,” said Adrienne Lance Lucas, C’90, chief operating officer of Inheritance Capital Group, LLC and event chairperson, “Through this fundraiser, we are building on Spelman’s mission — providing financial support to young women who have made a choice to change the world.”
