Spotlight on the Burnett Honors College at UCF

Friday August 29, 2008
UCFThe University of Central Florida has been a rising star among public universities in recent years, and in the new 2009 issue ofU.S. News and World Report it ranked #7 among "up-and-coming national universities." Since the 1990s, UCF has seen massive growth and a rise in selectivity. Still, not all students are keen on the idea of the often anonymous education that comes at a school of over 48,000 students.

So, for this week's spotlight I focus on the Burnett Honors College, a highly-selective college of under 2,000 students within UCF. The Burnett Honors College is relatively new, centered in a 10,000-square-foot building opened in 2002. Students admitted to the honors college will have the smaller classes and close faculty interaction more commonly found at elite liberal arts colleges. First-year composition classes, for example, have a maximum size of 15 students. At the same time, Burnett students can take advantage of the resources and energy that come with a massive Division I state university. Prospective students will also find the price tag attractive -- Florida is one of the better states in the U.S. for keeping tuition low and offering financial aid to the majority of students.

You can learn more in the University of Central Florida profile and be sure to check out the Burnett website at UCF. If you're familiar with the Burnett Honors College, please share your impressions with our readers in the Burnett discussion thread in the College Admissions Forum.
