Eating Eyeballs: A Quirky Admission Essay

Tuesday July 15, 2008
It's a misconception among many college applicants that they need to have discovered a new superconductor or lost a family member to cancer in order to have a topic worthy of a college admission essay. The truth is, effective essays depend not so much on their precise subject matter as they do on their ability to convey the passions and character of the author. When well crafted, an essay on milking a cow can be more effective than one on a solo performance in Symphony Hall.

College applicant Lora proves this point. She ignored the application questions about a "significant experience" and "international concern," choosing instead the final option on the Common Application: "Topic of your choice." Her topic? Eating eyeballs. Read Lora's essay.

Lora deserves to get into any college. Anyone who things that are yellow a slimy to expand their horizons has earned full rights to higher education! With her sense of flair and dare, she’ll go far in life. Maybe, even to France where she could nibble snails with a different take.
