Spotlight on St. Olaf College
Friday July 11, 2008
For this week's college spotlight, we turn to the northern town of Northfield, Minnesota, home of St. Olaf College. Northfield is probably best known for its other college -- Carleton -- but St. Olaf has much to brag about as well. For one, St. Olaf students have a habit of doing good things: many students go on to the Peace Corps, the school has an impressive number of Fulbright and Rhodes scholars, and the college prides itself on its sustainability efforts. For good reason, Lauren Pope profiled St. Olaf in his book Colleges That Change Lives. Academically, St. Olaf is particularly strong in music, math and the sciences, and the school is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
St. Olaf is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the student body is a bit more blond and Norwegian than most schools in the U.S.
Thanks to Deb Peterson, St. Olaf graduate and About.com Guide to Continuing Education, for recommending St. Olaf College for a spotlight. I invite you to visit the forum to recommend a college for a future spotlight or to share your thoughts about St. Olaf College.

Berkeley would not be the school it is today if it wasn’t for a St. Olaf graduate. Ernst Lawrence became a scientist at St. Olaf before going to Cal and making it a great graduate level science school. All the other great minds in the country came to Berkeley because of Lawrence…not bad for a St. Olaf man! St. Olaf didn’t make our top 30 LAC’s but you can see what students are at the top 30 LAC’s here: www.largeenvelope.com
He wasn’t a graduate: he went to St. Olaf for one year before transferring to the University of South Dakota.
