Should Students State Their Race on College Applications?

Tuesday July 8, 2008
Whether you approve or not, race is often a factor in the college admissions process. Many colleges believe that undergraduate education is more rewarding and valuable when the student body is diverse. But as the Chicago Sun-Times recently reported, many students are either refusing to identify their race on college applications, or they are marking the ambiguous "other" option without explaining what "other" means.

What are your thoughts? Should race be a factor in admissions, or should colleges make their decisions based entirely on test scores and high school records? And what do you think about students who refuse to identify their race on their college applications? Are they justified in doing so? Vote in the poll to the left, and discuss these issues in the College Admissions Forum.
