Spotlight on the University of Georgia Honors Program
This week's featured college isn't really a college, but the Honors Program at the University of Georgia. The idea behind the honors program is simple -- take highly motivated students and design small and challenging classes for them. The result is a program of about 2,500 students who get the feel of a small liberal arts college education within a large state university.
Students can apply to UGA's Honors Program from high school, as an internal applicant or as a transfer student. The program is competitive -- for 2007, high school students had an average 1446 SAT score (reading/math), and students already in college need a minimum 3.75 GPA. About 10% of UGA students are in the Honors Program.
Thanks to one of the College Admissions Forum readers for recommending the UGA Honors Program -- I'm happy to highlight the program here because it provides such a pleasing balance between the small college and large university experience. If you'd like to recommend a school for a future About.com spotlight, you can do it here. And you can also use the forum to share your impressions of the University of Georgia Honors Program.
